Sean C. Marshall, DAc, DiplAc
Founder, President, Academic Director, Board of Directors

Born in 1948 in Asheboro, North Carolina, Dr. Marshall has taught taijiquan and conducted a general acupuncture practice for 38 years. For much of that time he specialized in the treatment of gynecologic conditions by Chinese medicine. He graduated with honors from the Occidental Institute of Chinese Studies (Montreal) in 1978. He received his Master of Acupuncture from that institution in 1981. He has been a Diplomate of the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine since 1986. He was certified by the British Acupuncture Association in 1987. In 1988 he was the 42nd recipient of the Doctor of Acupuncture degree from the British College of Acupuncture (London), the subject of his dissertation being Reproductive System Energetics. Personal tutors in acupuncture have included: Nguyen Van Nghi, MD, Tran Viet Dzung, MD, Jean-Claud Darras, MD, Dr. Med. Hartwig Schuldt, Koji Okazaki, MD, OMD, and Wang Shih-chang, CA. Personal tutors in taijiquan were senior students of Cheng Man-ching: Fred Lehrmen, Tam Gibbs, Maggie Newman, Ed Young, and William C.C. Chen. He studied taiji sword with T. T. Liang.

Dr. Marshall has published and lectured in the United States, Germany, Austria, France, and England. He was founder and twice president of the Acupuncture Association of Minnesota. He is founder and president of Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine (1976). He was Professor and Director of the Program in Chinese Medicine at Northwestern College of Chiropractic from 1987 to 1990, in which he implemented the expansion of the didactic curriculum. He also created and supervised a new broad-based clinical internship component of that program.

The last 20 years have seen a remarkable expansion of Dr. Marshall's efforts and accomplishments in Chinese medicine. In 1999 he was given a directive by his mentor, Dr. Nguyen Van Nghi, to bring this doctor’s 1500 page French edition of the classical text: Huangdi Neijing Lingshu into the English language for the first time. These three volumes have recently been completed and published. Following the death of Dr. Nguyen in December of 1999, Christine Recours Nguyen, M.D., his daughter and executor of his estate, was pleased to find the work of the Jung Tao translation team to be of such quality, that this exclusive authorization was reaffirmed and renewed to include the entire works of Nguyen Van Nghi. This includes Suwen, Nanjing, Zhenjiu Dajing, Maijing and Shanghanlun. In 2007, Dr. Marshall was named President of Institute Van Nghi USA, a North American branch of the international organization dedicated to the perpetuation of Dr. Nguyen Van Nghi’s lifelong work in the field of Classical Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Marshall currently lives and works in the Appalachian Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. He continues to pursue his art and music through personal composition as well as incidental music for Jung Tao Productions DVD’s, original videos and digital art works for education in Chinese medicine and taijiquan.


Lora Moyle, LAc, MHS, RT, CNMT
Board of Directors (chairperson), Faculty

Lora L. Moyle began her career as a registered Radiographer and Nuclear Medicine Technologist and was the first registered technologist to enter and complete the B.S. in Radiologic Science Program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. From there she completed a Masters in Health Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. She has over fifteen years of combined experience serving as a faculty member at Trident Technical College, the Medical University of South Carolina, Vance-Granville Community College, where she was also the Chairperson of Health Education, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In addition to her experience in the educational arena, Lora has been employed as the Director of Operations for a radiologic physics consulting firm, President of the largest mobile mammography/health screening company in the nation, and Business Manager of a health care consulting firm and a medical acupuncture network. Ms. Moyle graduated from the acupuncture program at Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine in 2004, and is currently in private practice as a licensed acupuncturist.


James C. Nourse, PhD, LAc
Board of Directors

James C. Nource, PhD has devoted both his personal and professional life to exploring and integrating mind, body and spirit. Jim brings to his work an understanding gathered from 26 years of Jungian-oriented clinical practice, his passion for and knowledge of healing traditions of other cultures, and methods and experience gained teaching stress management programs for major corporations. He received his doctorate in Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1975. He has served as assistant professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Director of Clinical Psychology Training at the Hampton, Virginia Veterans Administration Medical Center, and has been in private practice since 1980.


Pat E. Birdsong, MS
Board of Directors

Pat Birdsong has lived in Sugar Grove, North Carolina for the past 30 years. She has been very active in community efforts and serves as a member of the Cove Creek Community Council. She was the founding Chair of the non-profit Sugar Grove Developmental Day School and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Cove Creek Preservation and Development for the past eight years. Ms. Birdsong began her career as a paralegal working with Civil Rights actions in the State of Mississippi and the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, Colorado. While her children were young, she worked as a batik artist from her home and was a member of two local cooperative galleries. She continued her education at Appalachian State University where she earned her Masters in Communication Disorders. She is currently Certified in Clinical Competence as a Speech-Language Pathologist, specializing in therapeutic intervention for young children with developmental disabilities. Ms. Birdsong has been a patient of alternative and Chinese medicines for the past 33 years, having first realized the benefits of acupuncture in 1974.


Thomas Walsh
Board of Directors

Mr. Walsh founded a successful local textile business in 1960, and has been involved in many business ventures since that time. In addition to his impressive business experience, Mr. Walsh has been invaluable to the rural community in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. He has donated much time and effort to community service projects in the area, including the establishment of the first rural campus for a college of medicine in the US and the revitalization of a financially distressed rural hospital. Mr. Walsh was elected to the Board in March 1999, and was selected due to his business experience and community service activities.


Celeste Ray,
Vice President, Administrative Director, Financial Director

Celeste Ray worked in the banking industry for seven years prior to joining the administration of Jung Tao School in 1996. During her time at Jung Tao, she has worked extensively in computer technology, including 2D, 3D, and 4D graphics, video editing and production, web design and implementation, database authoring and management, page layout, networking, and computer hardware and software maintenance. In addition to her work in the administration of the school, she is involved in the creation of educational materials for Jung Tao Productions.

Ms. Ray began studying taijiquan in 1994, and entered the acupuncture program at Jung Tao School of Chinese Studies in September 1995, from which she received a certificate of completion in 1998. She continues to study taijiquan, Daoist philosophy and Chinese medicine with Dr. Marshall, and also has an active interest in world mythologies, religions and philosophies.


Andrew Prescott, LAc
Clinic Director

Andrew Prescott has been practicing Acupuncture since 1977. He qualified as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in 1975 at Glenside and Barrow Hospital, England. He worked at the Bristol Children’s Hospital, Bristol, England, and then completed his initial training in Acupuncture at the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (UK) Leamington Spa, England (Lic. Ac.) in 1977. He holds an advanced degree in Acupuncture from the College of Traditional Acupuncture (UK), representing additional clinical training (B. Ac.). He obtained his certification from the National Commission for Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Dipl.Ac., NCCAOM) and North Carolina license in 1995.

In addition to clinical private practice since 1977, he has been a guest lecturer of Shen Tao Acupressure at the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Leamington Spa, England, and he has also founded a school of acupressure, and taught at, Middle Piccadily Natural Healing Center, Sherborne, Dorset, England.

He is currently in private practice in Hillsborough and Durham, NC, and a clinical supervisor at Jung Tao School, Sugar Grove, NC.


Twila Tuttle
Office Manager

Ms. Tuttle, a native of Minnesota, has a large background in public relations. Her experience with the public include working as a teaching assistant at Concordia College, from which she graduated in 1974; working with local farmers as a Grain Warehouse Examiner for the State of Minnesota; teaching beginning taijiquan classes; and managing a large chiropractic office in Vermont. Additionally, Ms. Tuttle was part of a committee responsible for organizing and administrating a large annual science fiction convention, where she served as treasurer. In 1996 Ms. Tuttle moved to North Carolina to volunteer her efforts at a local animal sanctuary, where she continues to contribute her time. She is now the office manager at Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine.


Julie Barefoot
Director of Admissions, Students, and Alumni

Julie Barefoot began her career teaching high school after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a B.A. in English and Certification in Secondary Education. She devoted several years to education as well as various programs promoting the success of at-risk high school students for college preparation. After a sufficient amount of time in the classroom, she shifted gears and began working in the medical field as an aesthetician. It was through this experience with Western Medicine that she learned that she felt inspired by helping those in need at an even deeper level, and this eventually facilitated her studies of Eastern Medicine. In May of 2007, Julie moved to the Blue Ridge area to join the Jung Tao staff. She is currently enjoying her role as Student Director and Admissions Director because she feels that supporting other students through their journey of learning Classical Chinese Medicine is a way to pay it forward.


Michelle Connell
Librarian

Michelle Connell came to Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine as a student of Chinese medicine, and soon thereafter joined the administration as a team member. Her background in aviation, holistic health, clerical organization and management made her the perfect fit with the eclectic collection of renaissance men and women of Jung Tao. Michelle obtained her commercial pilots license in 1995, and her flight instructor rating in 1999 in the pursuit of a career in commercial aviation. Along the way, she found a love for the wonder and benefits of holistic medicine, and became a licensed massage therapist in 2000. Throughout her years of schooling she developed her management and administrative skills while serving in managerial and bookkeeping positions and for two landmark establishments in Houston, Texas. Michelle has made it her purpose to make a difference in the lives and treatment of all beings. She works to incorporate her academic experience with the gentle loving kindness required to be a wonderful acupuncturist and a beneficial component of the Jung Tao experience.


Catherine Bruce-Smith
Administrative Assistant

Catherine Bruce-Smith’s involvement in the activities of educational institutions began when she became a member of the Religious Studies Society of the Virginia Commonwealth University. She was active in coordinating faculty lectures, weekly “Tea Time” meetings, and student presentations. While studying abroad at Victoria University of Wellington, Catherine was one of the founding members of The Society for Global Philosophy, a student organization developed to promote understanding and respect amongst academics and students, by way of faculty lectures, weekly “Philosophy in the Cafe” meetings, and interaction with already existing student societies. Upon returning to the states, Catherine became president of the Religious Studies Society and a teacher’s assistant, while she completed her B.A. in Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her duties involved hosting society meetings and faculty presentations, presenting a paper, reviewing student’s works. After finishing undergraduate studies, Catherine accepted a scholarship to independently study philosophy at the Krishnamurti Foundation of India, where she learned basic skills in verifying, transcribing, and editing manuscripts. Catherine slipped into the Jung Tao Community very smoothly, which can be accounted for by her previous involvement with institutions and societies paralleling the jung tao.
